Compose Gmail Message by Merlin Mann

Compose Gmail Message - Aiken Web Solutions website design harrisburg

Task: send an email.

Process: open Postbox to compose a new email.

Problem: the inbox.

Every time I had an email to send it would cause me to open my email application. Opening the application displays my inbox to me and distraction ensues. On a search to avoid such distraction I came across Merlin Mann’s solution to this problem: Compose Gmail Message.app.

Task: send an email.

Process: launch Compose Gmail Message.app

This opens the Gmail compose window in a new tab in my default browser. So, I compose my message, click send, and close the tab.

Give it a go and let me know what you think.

New Product in the Office: Apple Magic Trackpad

Apple Magic Trackpad - Aiken Web Solutions

Made a stop at the Park City Apple Store yesterday for a few items, one of which was a new Apple Magic Trackpad for my desk. As of a few weeks ago I was solely using my MacBook Pro, but have since added an external monitor. This change made the trackpad on my MacBook Pro inaccessible  for use, thus the Trackpad. So far, so good. After a day of using it I have no complaints ..will edit this post if any come up :-)

Do you use a Magic Trackpad? If so, any thoughts?

Personality in Your Office

Over the weekend I spent time in my office not doing actual work work, but instead worked on adding some personality to the space. The walls in my office have been bare for just about a year now, so they were due for a touch of class. I have a small collection of Frank Sintra records, and decided that they would be a great fit for the space.

What do you do in your office to add a touch of your personality, or to make it more comfortable for you to work in?

Tools of an Entrepreneur

Entrepreneurs are often known for their ideas and/or business accumen. Equally important are the tools they have on-hand to get the job done. Whether it is building a website, managing a team, brewing beer, writing posts, painting a house, building an app, or anything else, make sure you have the best possible tools at your disposal. Not only will they help you work more efficiently, but they just might help you be the best at what you do.

Recommended Business Tool: Freshbooks

Freshbooks - Aiken Web Solutions

You may already know about Freshbooks, if you are a freelancer or business owner the chance is very good that you do. If you aren’t familiar with Freshbooks and have to send invoices, you need to give it a look. Painlessly generate professional invoices to send to your clients via email or snail mail. Send estimates, then create a one-time or recurring invoice from your estimate. Again, painlessly. Freshbooks couldn’t make the process of estimating, invoicing, getting paid, generating reports, tracking expenses, and more, any easier. I’m happy to be back.

If you are looking for a similar solution, definitely give Freshbooks a look. Great web app, and they also have a slick iOS app for staying productive on the go.

Mail Pilot for iOS

Mail Pilot iOS App - Aiken Web Solutions

Last week I wrote about Mail Pilot and their plan to launch an iOS app in the near future. That time came for current subscribers today, Wednesday April 10, at 12:01 AM and will be available for download until 11:59 PM (local time).

Mail Pilot Yacht Club - Aiken Web SolutionsI downloaded the Mail Pilot iOS app first thing after my alarm went off this morning and was extremely impressed with the initial experience. Upon first launching the app you are greeted with a few screens to swipe through as an introduction to the app. Adding my email accounts was painless, and performing Mail Pilot email functions like completing an email, saving an email for later, or sorting an email to a list, all worked without a single crash. The design is clean, uncluttered, and very easy to navigate. Mail Pilot has already replaced Mailbox on my iPhone.

Unless I’m blind here are noticeable things that are missing: icon badge for emails to complete, customizable email signature, push.

Public access to the Mail Pilot iOS app is to follow soon.

Hello, and congrats on a beautiful iOS app!

Curious if there is support for a custom email signature that I’m overlooking. If not, part of a future release?

Thanks!

Communication and Knowledge in Your Business

Satellite - Aiken Web Solutions

As I mentioned yesterday, a lot of what I devote my day to is the building of our company. I am not so concerned about thinking up products and services as I am about the longevity and overall efficiency of Aiken Web Solutions. We have internal needs and we have external needs.

Internal needs are processes for organization, and the workflow of our team when we are working on client projects. And on the sales end of things, internal needs is the organization of data and lead management.

External needs are understanding our process and how our team will work with them and their team, and feeling comfortable with how we manage our projects and also keep them in the loop as we are working.

As with just about every single area of life, it all comes down to communication and knowledge. Below are two things I dread hearing, and strive to not ever hear:

“I didn’t receive that email.”

“I didn’t know that.”

Communication and Knowledge. Two areas of business that I never thought I would care about more, or that I would place such importance upon. And really, these two areas are what a lot of business comes down to, no matter what industry you are in.

More on this to come in future posts. Until then, make sure you have systems in place.
